A Research-Based Approach to Early Learning
The HighScope Curriculum is a nationally recognized, research-backed framework that helps young children build critical skills through hands-on, active learning. At Buttons & Bows Preschool, this approach perfectly supports our mission to provide joyful, meaningful experiences that spark a love of learning.
With HighScope, children are active participants in their education. Rather than simply being told what to do, they explore, experiment, and discover—building skills across literacy, math, problem-solving, and social-emotional growth. It’s a proven approach that aligns with key developmental milestones and prepares children for lifelong learning.

At Buttons & Bows, we believe children thrive when they feel empowered, curious, and supported. HighScope gives children the freedom to make choices, explore their interests, and build confidence in their abilities—all within a structured, caring environment.
This curriculum aligns beautifully with our core values: joyful learning, nurturing growth, and excellence in education. By combining structure with independence, it helps each child reach their full potential in a way that feels both natural and exciting.
What Active Learning Looks Like at Buttons & Bows
Plan-Do-Review
Each day, children take an active role in shaping their learning. During the Plan-Do-Review process, they first plan what they want to explore, then carry it out through hands-on activities, and finally reflect on what they learned. This process builds decision-making, memory, and critical thinking.
Children learn to express their ideas, listen to others, and adapt their plans as they go—skills that are essential for both school and life. Through this daily routine, they gain a sense of ownership over their learning and develop resilience when facing new challenges.
Hands-On Exploration
Whether it’s building towers in the block center, experimenting with water and sand, or creating art with open-ended materials, children are constantly engaging their senses and minds.
These purposeful play experiences help children connect concepts to the real world and deepen their understanding.
Teacher as Guide
Our teachers act as supportive guides—observing, asking open-ended questions, and stepping in with encouragement or redirection when needed. They don’t just “teach”—they partner with children to co-create learning moments that are rich, respectful, and personalized.
By fostering strong relationships and modeling positive interactions, our teachers help children develop empathy, cooperation, and a sense of belonging within the classroom community.
